Winterberg is the ideal place for hiking
Winterberg is the hiking area par excellence. Both in winter and in other seasons you can enjoy walking. Every season has its charm. Winterberg is located in the Hochsauerland. This mountainous landscape offers many beautiful views and fresh air and is suitable for both recreational and professional hikers. There are many different walking routes and possibilities at every level.During the walks you will pass through nice villages, endless forests, rolling valleys and you will certainly have the chance to see deer, foxes and other animals. During the walks you regularly pass through a village with restaurants, a terrace or a cafe to eat and drink something.
In general, the paths are easily accessible and the routes are well signposted. You can also get specific hiking maps at the VVV. In addition, there are also a number of city walks nearby.
We want to highlight 3 well-known walking routes.
1. Walking route the Kahler Asten
One of the most famous hiking trails is the one to the Kahler Asten. This runs as follows:
From the central square in Winterberg, follow the street Am Waltenberg. After about 200 meters turn left at the crossroads.
Continue to Nuhnestrasse and follow this road (slightly uphill). Follow the signs X13, over the asphalt road and then along the Philosofenweg (this is a forest road) to the town hall.
Walk straight ahead on the Fichtenweg until you reach the campsite at the foot of the Kappeberg. At the campsite, the X13 continues to a hut at the foot of the Kahler Asten.
Now cross the B236/B480 and walk uphill (steeply) to restaurant Astenturm (you can see this from afar).
At the top you can enjoy the view and the views. And there are many other walks here too!
2. Rothaarsteig hiking trail:
Another world-famous hiking route also runs through Winterberg: the Rothaarsteig. This is a walking route of 154 km in total and runs from Brilon in the Sauerland to Dillenbrug in the Westerwald. Of course you can also walk some parts (or one) of the total 154 km.
The Rothaarsteig runs through the Rothaar Mountains on mostly unpaved paths, through vast forests but also valleys, meadows and heaths. You regularly walk along streams and small rivers or through a National Park.
3. Winterberg Hochtour:
The third special route we would like to mention is the Winterberger Hochtour. It starts and ends at the Kahler Asten and runs over the highest mountains of it
Hochsauerland and is about 80 km long. You can also walk one or more stages on this walk. You pass beautiful places. In any case, the start (and end point) is already special. Kahler Asten is a nature reserve and very beautiful.
Part of the Winterberger Hochtour runs over the tops of the Rothaar Mountains (as mentioned above) and you pass the villages of Langewiese, Neuastenberg and
Lenneplatz. Here you have an incredibly beautiful 360 degree panoramic view of the surroundings and you can see very far in clear weather.
